Plant nursery Skink d.o.o. was founded in 1994 in the area of Rovinj and since then, as a family business, successfully develops the production of fruit trees and ornamental plants, provides consulting services and programs for raising permanent crops, as well as organization of workshops in agriculture. It all started with Željko Prgomet and his parents, an expert in Mediterranean fruit growing and a PhD in agricultural sciences while at the same time a long time professor at the Polytechnic of Rijeka. The family business has been continued for the 3rd generation by his daughter Iva, as well agronomist and PhD in agricultural sciences and a passionate plant lover.
We have about 4 ha of land, and the nursery covers an area of 8,000 m2, of which 1,000 m2 is occupied by greenhouses and glasshouses.
As part of the plant nursery, there has recently been an educational centre where various professional workshops and lectures are held.
Our goal is to combine scientific research and expertise. We are trying to transfer years of training, learning and cooperation with colleagues and experts from all over the world into production and consulting to producers and all plant lovers.
The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is a tree that, due to its survival and resistance to difficult conditions in which it has been growing for thousands of years, symbolizes strength, peace, loyalty and the Mediterranean countries. In Istria, olive trees represent also the way of living. From the very beginning, we decided to contribute the best we can to the production of olive trees so after 30 years we can boast extensive experience we have in olive tree production.
We are particularly proud of our collection of fig varieties (mother trees within nurseries with 51 different varieties). We always have about 10 different varieties of figs in production, and we recently (September 2020) published the book “Fig (Ficus carica L.)” in which we have woven years of experience and work on this exceptional culture.
We have been active for some time also in the production of chestnut plants, domestic ecotypes of larger fruit and European-Japanese hybrids, resistant to chestnut wasp and more resistant to chestnut blight. In order to provide lovers of this species with basic information about cultivation and care in one place, in 2013 we published the book “Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.)”.
In addition to the rich tradition of producing planting material of fruit and ornamental plants, the offer of our nursery also includes: development of projects for permanent crops, consulting and management of permanent crops technology, education and professional trips in agriculture, horticultural landscaping and drying of fruits, vegetables and aromatic plants.
